About Me

The Full Story

I was born on the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia, I was raised in the capital city of Castries, my parents however, were raised in the countryside. Growing up, I was always intrigued by the way my mother and grandmothers seemed to instinctively resort to the use of herbs, leaves, roots, and flowers. There was always a solution that could be derived from the natural world, among trees and plants, when she didn’t know, she would ask my great-grandmother. At the Castries market, women would lay out baskets filled with these herbs, leaves, roots, tree barks, and petals, what we refer to collectively as ‘bush medicine’. Many people relied on bush medicine, this is still part of our culture today.

At this same time in the Caribbean, many women also wore their hair naturally and did not iron it out with hot combs or relax with perms. I had always enjoyed styling hair, I learned to do it well, and consequently, I became my neighborhood’s hairstylist. As time went on, perms steadily became more popular as more people found it easier to manage straight hair. I too was taken by the allure of straight hair, but not for long. My first perm was at the age of 14, and at the age of 18, after graduating from high school, I transitioned back to natural.

I migrated to the United States in 2005, flew into New York, and lived in Brooklyn. I have always been intrigued by naturopathy. I was raised to understand that there was always a solution in nature, and in Brooklyn, I had come to know of many more herbs and botanicals than I was previously aware of. I moved to Texas and settled in Dallas. Whilst there I applied my hairstyling skills and began to grow my clientele as a loctitician and natural hair stylist. Being a hairstylist caused me to become familiar with many of the various hair and scalp issues that women face daily. To address some of these issues, I went to work on a few special plant-based solutions that can be used as a complete hair care regimen. Today I craft, package, and distribute these solutions as Crafted by Eyat.

It has been several years since I decided to investigate our flora as a viable means of taking better care of our hair and skin. I have learned much, as a hair stylist, a kitchen chemist, a curator, and a businesswoman, and I am still learning. I consider myself a bona fide member of the ‘go natural’ movement, Crafted by Eyat is simply an expression of my way of life.

Today, I  am a Natural Hair Educator, Master Loctician, and Natural Hair Specialist. Between 2019  and 2024 I have trained well over a dozen natural hair stylists and lociticians. Many of them have gone on to become self-employed.
